digital desk,Mumbai. Prasar Bharati has tied up with IIT-Kanpur to work on the feasibility of direct-to-mobile broadcasting. Prasar Bharati CEO Shashi Shekhar Vempati said on Wednesday that a pilot project is underway. If this effort is successful, people will be able to receive broadcast content on smartphones in the near future.

In his keynote address during the online livestream of the 10th CII Big Picture Summit, Vempati said, “There is a need to make that content accessible to millions of users when an event like IPL has a huge audience. All content on unicast mode can be directly delivered to people’s smartphones or smart TVs via the Internet.

The CEO said that digitization is one of the major changes that have made public broadcasting easier in the last three or four years.

He said, practically every Doordarshan channel and All India Radio station now has digital medium across multiple platforms, be it YouTube for livestreaming or social media to connect directly with the audience.

There is also the Prasar Bharati app, he said, which has 200-plus radio streams. Anyone can listen to the programs of their hometown radio station wherever they are in the world.

CII organizes Big Picture Summit every year to discuss opportunities and solve challenges. This year’s theme is: Raising New Heights of Content, Creativity and Innovation.

The primary objective of the summit is to discuss global trends and opportunities, softening of revenues due to macroeconomic turbulence, understanding domestic consumer preferences and increasing focus on local opportunities for a global audience.
